Switching Car Insurance Companies

There are plenty of possible reasons why people switch their auto insurance company. Such reasons can include a new job, a move to a new home, just unsatisfied with the current car insurance company or you learn that you can save money by getting cheaper auto insurance from a different company.

Why should you switch to a new auto insurance company?
Sometimes your auto insurance premiums increase because a lot of people in your coverage group might have filed a lot of claims during the past year. A coverage group is usually a logical grouping of people of similiar age, certain type of cars and trucks among other characteristic of a premium. If your auto insurance company raised your rates and you have not filed any claims, the previously mentioned reason would explain why. When and if this happens, spend a few minutes online and shop around for auto insurance to see if a different company might offer you better rates.

Cancelling Old Policy
Usually to cancel your old car insurance policy, you just need to send in a letter informing your old auto insurance comopany that you would like your policy cancelled on a specific date. After that, the insurer will send you some sort of form to confirm your termination of the policy. Contact your agent if you don't receive this form after informing them that you wish to cancel your policy.

Not So Fast
Don't cancel your old car insurance until you have everything in place with the new auto insurance company. Don't risk being uninsured for a few days because it could potentially cost you a lot of money should anything happen. Since most states require drivers to have auto insurance, your old auto insurance company might even ask to see proof of the new auto insurance policy before officially cancelling the old policy.

When is the Right Time to Switch?
The easiest time to switch car insurance company is when your old insurance policy is set to be renewed. It just makes it easier on payments and avoids any possible expense and fees to switch in the middle of the plan.

This does not mean you need to wait till renewal to cancel your policy. You have the legal right to cancel whenever you want as long as you notify the old insurance company in writing of your cancellation.

The actual switching of auto insurance companies can take as little as a day with proper advance notice to your old car insurance company. Try to have a copy of your old policy with all the detailed coverage so you see that you are actually getting the same coverage for a cheaper price.
